Workload, pay problems for board By Sarla Donovan THE BANKS Peninsula Community Board could lose members if pay rates aren’t increased. A population-based funding model means board members are paid less than half those on citybased boards. Banks Peninsula board members are paid $9527 compared with between $22,503 and $23,742 for those in the city. First time board member John McLister said he won’t stand again if the status quo remains in place. And others say that given the heavy workload and low remuneration, they would have to seriously consider whether they put themselves forward in the 2019 local body elections. Currently, city council and elected board members’ pay rates are set by the Remuneration Authority in Wellington. A recent proposal to shift responsibility for deciding pay rates onto city councils would allow them to better reflect community needs and workloads. And that is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Lyttelton songwriter’s recent achievements. But in the midst of international success, the 27-year-old hasn’t forgotten where he calls home. In the music video for Williams’ latest single, What’s Chasing You, eagle-eyed people will spot the New Brighton Pier featured in the background. The video, released on Friday, was shot on South Brighton beach by Christchurch filmmaker Martin Sagadin. It features a swaggering Williams who seemingly bullies other beach-goers with dance moves. Said Williams of his latest song title: “It’s an earnest question. It’s the only thing I’ve ever really wanted to know of another human being. Like all good questions, it’s childishly simple. Harding’s vocals feature alongside Williams on the record’s debut single Nobody Gets What They Want Anymore. A song which tackles the way

Williams spent three weeks tucked away in the port town, a few houses down from his family home, with Lyttelton producer Ben Edwards and backing band The Yarra Benders working on the record’s preproduction. They then flew 12,000km to record the album in the United States. Williams is following the release of Make Way for Love with a 50 date global tour, including a night at The Foundry on May 23. By Sarla Donovan A LINEUP of international buskers will be performing in Lyttelton’s backyard on Saturday as part of the 25th World Buskers Festival. In Albion Square from 10.30am, there will be Sharon Mahoney from Canada; at 11.20am, Witty Look from Japan; 12.10pm, Kilted Colin from the United States and at 1pm Snap Boogie performs, also from the US. Festival organiser Melissa Haberfield said it was the first time performing in New Zealand for all except Sharon Mahoney. There will be festival staff onsite giving out pocket guides for the whole festival as well as other giveaways. Meanwhile, a Lyttelton busker will once again feature in the central city festival line-up. Lyttelton’s famous ‘Rubber Band Boy’ Shay Horay (left) holds the Guinness world record for 78 bands. The 38-year-old is back at the festival for the 21st time and says after 12 years of stretching rubber bands over his face, he still loves the routine.

THE SUMNER Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a large bonfire in the Taylors Mistake car park in the early hours of Sunday morning. The fire – which was close to vegetation – was spotted by a resident. Chief fire officer Daryl Sayer said it was concerning as Christchurch is still in a restricted fire season and open air fires must not be lit without a permit. It comes as recent rain has eased the fire risk across Banks Peninsula, but authorities say it will only take a few hot nor’westerly days to push it up again. “There is still a lot of summer to go and conditions can change quickly,’’ said Darrin Woods, principal rural fire officer for the Christchurch/Selwyn Rural Fire District. “If we get a return to the kind of weather we had before Christmas when temperatures were routinely in the high 20s and early 30s, the countryside will very quickly dry out, escalating the fire risk. “It is important people report any fires or smoke to 111 immediately. We’re also asking that on hot days, particularly when it’s windy, people take extreme care when doing any activities that may produce sparks such as grinding, welding or even mowing laws on stony ground,’’ said Mr Woods. A restricted fire season has been in place across the region since the start of December. This means people must apply for a permit if they want to light a fire in open air. Anyone who lights a fire without a permit can expect a visit from Fire and Emergency New Zealand. The Emergency Services Volunteer Barbecue encourages locals to support the club by heading down to Bunnings Warehouse Riccarton, between 9am and 4pm, to buy a sausage or make a donation. All money raised from the barbecue will go directly to the club. Surf Life Saving New Zealand senior executive Matt Warren said he’s looking forward to seeing the community come together to support emergency services. “This great initiative will see all funds raised go straight to local surf life saving clubs, helping our volunteers continue serving the community in times of need. “We encourage locals to head to their local Bunnings to buy a sausage or make a donation to help us raise funds and continue the vital work we do,” he said. So I want to give a big shout out and thanks to the many volunteers who work so hard, not for recognition or acknowledgment, but for the good of others. Whether it be the surf lifesavers, the firefighters, the coastguards, community patrols or the many others that keep our communities strong

Mother, daughter win on the waves A TRIO of local surfers have returned home with titles after competing at the national surfing championship at Makorori Beach, Gisborne, last week. Taylors Mistake mother and daughter, Donna and Ava Henderson, had the perfect family vacation by both claiming gold

medals. Donna won the women’s over 40 title with a score of 10.2 in the final. She also finished third in the longboard category. Her daughter Ava, 12, took out her first national title by winning the girls under-14 section with a score of 13.7 to finish ahead of Levin’s Natasha Gouldsbury and Piha’s Liv Haysom. More impressively, Ava also

competed in the girls under-16 against much older opposition where she held her own. She posted the top score of 12.4 in the heats before being eliminated at the semi-final stage. Donna is the founder of the Christchurch School of Surf at Sumner Beach. She has been surfing since her early 20s and won her first national title at the age of 42 in

2017. Ava on the other hand has now already claimed her first national crown at just 12-yearsold. Redcliffs resident Lucy Te Moananui also claimed a title in Gisborne in the women’s over 30 category. She also finished third in the women’s stand up paddleboard final with a score of 9.97 behind Stella Smith from Gisborne

and Alexis Poulter from Waihi. Te Moananui also made it to the semi-final stage in the longboard. There was also success for Estella Hungerford, who finished second in the women’s longboard with a score of 6.83, behind Auckland’s Sasha Brownlie. Hungerford also finished fourth in the girls under-16 final by scoring 7.17.

A letter to our community. Thank you to our wonderful staff and to all those helping us following the recent devastating fire at the GELITA NZ plant in Woolston, Christchurch. There were four people on site at the time of the fire and fortunately no one was hurt. The fire has caused major structural and electrical damage, primarily in our processing area, and the food manufacturing areas of the plant. Our first job is to clean up, now that the fire and insurance investigators have given us the go ahead. The clean-up operation will include the removal of partially processed beef hide from the site over the next three or so weeks. During the removal, there will unfortunately be increased odours at some stages of the day. We are keenly aware of our near neighbours and will work very hard to keep the impact to an absolute minimum. Despite our best efforts, we expect that there will be spikes in odour while the partly processed material is treated and removed. It’s a huge job. But, once the material is removed, the source of the odour will have been eliminated. We are grateful for your patience and understanding while we undertake this work and we apologise for any short-term effect this may have on our local community. GELITA NZ takes beef hide, a by-product from meat works, extracts the collagen, and turns it into gelatine powder for use in a broad range of industries including the food, beverage, health and pharmaceutical sectors. While the fire has been a major setback for GELITA NZ, the plant was fully insured and our parent company has established a support team in Germany to help us through this period of uncertainty. Our customers are being serviced by the wider GELITA group while we plan for our future. We remain positive. GELITA NZ employs 60 staff and a further 300 indirectly. About three-quarters of our high quality gelatine is sent overseas. There is no doubt that we face a difficult period but we will continue to work hard for our future.

Perhaps you sit a lot for work and you were on the go or, you are normally more active and the holiday break was more sedentary. Either way the sooner you pay attention to these signals the easier it will be to deal with it. So what can you do to ward off pain and stiffness and boost your energy and alertness? 10 simple stretching exercises at your desk that will release tension from head to toe. They take only a few minutes. Set the alarm on your cell phone or computer to go off every hour to remind you it’s time to get up and stretch. Just stand up and sit down - no hands If you stand up and sit down (over and over) without using your hands it can be a challenge, do it while you’re on the phone; no one will know. Shrug your shoulders - to release the neck and shoulders Inhale deeply and shrug your shoulders, lifting them high up to your ears. Hold. Release and drop. Repeat three times. Loosen the hands with air circles Clench both fists, stretching both hands
