Buskers come to Lyttelton

International acts It’s busker season, and on Saturday international acts like Sharon Mahoney, of Canada, and Witty Look, Japan, will be humouring, shocking and embarrassing the crowd at Lyttelton’s Albion Square. The World Buskers festival runs in Christchurch from tomorrow until January 28, and will feature Lyttelton’s own Shay Horay. •Story page 4

Workload, pay problems for board By Sarla Donovan THE BANKS Peninsula Community Board could lose members if pay rates aren’t increased. A population-based funding model means board members are paid less than half those on citybased boards. Banks Peninsula board members are paid $9527 compared with between $22,503 and $23,742 for those in the city. First time board member John McLister said he won’t stand again if the status quo remains in place. And others say that given the heavy workload and low remuneration, they would have to seriously consider whether they put themselves forward in the 2019 local body elections. Currently, city council and elected board members’ pay rates are set by the Remuneration Authority in Wellington. A recent proposal to shift responsibility for deciding pay rates onto city councils would allow them to better reflect community needs and workloads. Board chairwoman Christine Wilson said she supported the idea. •Story, pages 6-7

Teens take a dive The scorching conditions have drawn large crowds to beaches, including a Redcliffs teen and his mates.

THERE’S trouble at t’mill. Well on the Banks Peninsula Community Board anyway. On page 6 and 7 today, we reveal a growing annoyance over the amount of money board members are paid compared with their counterparts in Christchurch. We also compare the amount of time board members put in compared to their Christchurch counterparts. And the Banks Peninsula members definitely have a point. Banks Peninsula members (excluding the chair, deputy chair and councillor Andrew Turner) are paid $9527. Members of the ition datE] six Christchurch community boards receive between $22,503$23,742. Pay rates are based on population but that could change this year as the Remuneration Authority assess the formula. The sooner it is changed the better. – Barry Clarke

By Julia Evans MARLON Williams has opened for Bruce Springsteen, won a Silver Scroll, and played Later . . . with Jools Holland. And that is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Lyttelton songwriter’s recent achievements. But in the midst of international success, the 27-year-old hasn’t forgotten where he calls home. In the music video for Williams’ latest single, What’s Chasing You, eagle-eyed people will spot the New Brighton Pier featured in the background. The video, released on Friday, was shot on South Brighton beach by Christchurch filmmaker Martin Sagadin. It features a swaggering Williams who seemingly bullies other beach-goers with dance moves. Said Williams of his latest song title: “It’s an earnest question. It’s the only thing I’ve ever really wanted to know of another human being. Like all good questions, it’s childishly simple. We all want to live inside the fears of the ones we

love, if not to dispel them then at the very least to understand, empathize and let’s be honest, compare hands. I’m not convinced truly understanding another’s woes would really bring anyone happiness, but I am a nosey boy. What’s chasing you?” The single is the latest release from the now Melbournebased songwriter’s upcoming sophmore album Make Way for

Love, which comes out February 16. The album was written in the wake of Williams’ break-up with another acclaimed Lyttelton songwriting talent Aldous Harding. “Then I wrote about 15 songs in a month,” he recalled. Harding’s vocals feature alongside Williams on the record’s debut single Nobody Gets What They Want Anymore. A song which tackles the way

the pair attempted to navigate their separate demanding careers until they couldn’t. Williams spent three weeks tucked away in the port town, a few houses down from his family home, with Lyttelton producer Ben Edwards and backing band The Yarra Benders working on the record’s preproduction. They then flew 12,000km to record the album in the United States. Williams is following the release of Make Way for Love with a 50 date global tour, including a night at The Foundry on May 23. Tickets avaliable through Ticketmaster.

Buskers in our backyard Does he put them anywhere else on his body? “I would never put a band anywhere that potentially cause injury.” He claims to know more about rubber bands than anyone else, except the guy that makes them. Apparently close encounters with rubber bands help keep you looking youthful. “I went to see a plastic surgeon and asked if one day I might go from looking like a young man to an old man overnight. Would my face suddenly sag? He informed me that these weekly events are very good for the face. It’s the same as getting a facial massage, it keeps the skin flexible and should theoretically prevent wrinkles.” He loves what he does. “Being self-employed for the last 20 years; travelling the world....why would I want to change that?” You can catch Shay Horay in the central city performing Rubberband Boy’s Greatest Hits, ‘The One Man Band’ - a musical instrument powered by you guessed it a rubberband - a pogostick escape that will blow your mind and of course the routine that has made him famous worldwide.

By Sarla Donovan A LINEUP of international buskers will be performing in Lyttelton’s backyard on Saturday as part of the 25th World Buskers Festival. In Albion Square from 10.30am, there will be Sharon Mahoney from Canada; at 11.20am, Witty Look from Japan; 12.10pm, Kilted Colin from the United States and at 1pm Snap Boogie performs, also from the US. Festival organiser Melissa Haberfield said it was the first time performing in New Zealand for all except Sharon Mahoney. There will be festival staff onsite giving out pocket guides for the whole festival as well as other giveaways. Meanwhile, a Lyttelton busker will once again feature in the central city festival line-up. Lyttelton’s famous ‘Rubber Band Boy’ Shay Horay (left) holds the Guinness world record for 78 bands. The 38-year-old is back at the festival for the 21st time and says after 12 years of stretching rubber bands over his face, he still loves the routine.

Dispute looming over pay for The Remuneration Authority will decide if Banks Peninsula Community Board members will be paid the same as their Christchurch counterparts. If they don’t get equal pay there could be departures. Sarla Donovan reports

A random five-month comparison of last year’s Banks Peninsula Community Board meetings with city-based board, FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood, showed a big disparity in the length of meetings:

FIRST-TIME BANKS Peninsula Community Board member John McLister is a busy man. A father of two young children, he fits his board responsibilities around a full-time job and also chairs the Lyttelton Seafarers Centre Charitable Trust. Before standing for the board in the 2016 local body elections, he had coached all the junior rugby teams in Diamond Harbour. So he’s not without community spirit. “The impact of legislative requirements for council decisionmaking and public participation could make decision-making contentious and open councils up to unnecessary public criticism.” Consultation on the plan closed on December 15. The authority is considering the feedback and aims to have new rules in place by the next local body elections in October, 2019. Mr McLister said he won’t stand in those elections if remuneration is not improved. “It is not just a question of money. I want to see a fair deal for anyone standing for our community board. Reasonable remuneration attracts talented people from a wide spectrum of society. I don’t want to be elected because no one else will stand. That’s not democracy.”

We have been delegated responsibility for the Naval Point development, for instance, which is a huge thing.” Ms Wilson said she didn’t think population was a Pam Richardson fair way to determine pay rates and she supported the Remuneration Authority’s proposed changes. She said it was too soon to say whether she would stand again, but the level of remuneration would not affect her decision, “as this is something I was aware of going in to this term”. Banks Peninsula Community Board deputy chairwoman Pam Richardson said as the former chairwoman of the AkaroaWairewa Community Board, she had gone “from a high rate to a low rate” and she would “seriously have to consider” whether to stand again next time. Board member Janis Haley said remuneration wouldn’t have any bearing on her decision to stand again, but it might put others off, especially younger candidates. “I don’t think it’s democratic.” Board member Jed O’Donoghue said remuneration wouldn’t be his only consideration, but he was finding the time commitment challenging. Working full-time as a train driver for KiwiRail, last year he had to take 20 days of annual leave to allow him to attend the

He said the lower pay for Banks Peninsula board members was unfair. “I can’t see how any reasonable person would think it’s anything but.”

THE SUMNER Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a large bonfire in the Taylors Mistake car park in the early hours of Sunday morning. The fire – which was close to vegetation – was spotted by a resident. Chief fire officer Daryl Sayer said it was concerning as Christchurch is still in a restricted fire season and open air fires must not be lit without a permit. It comes as recent rain has eased the fire risk across Banks Peninsula, but authorities say it will only take a few hot nor’westerly days to push it up again. “There is still a lot of summer to go and conditions can change quickly,’’ said Darrin Woods, principal rural fire officer for the Christchurch/Selwyn Rural Fire District. “If we get a return to the kind of weather we had before Christmas when temperatures were routinely in the high 20s and early 30s, the countryside will very quickly dry out, escalating the fire risk. “It is important people report any fires or smoke to 111 immediately. We’re also asking that on hot days, particularly when it’s windy, people take extreme care when doing any activities that may produce sparks such as grinding, welding or even mowing laws on stony ground,’’ said Mr Woods. A restricted fire season has been in place across the region since the start of December. This means people must apply for a permit if they want to light a fire in open air. Anyone who lights a fire without a permit can expect a visit from Fire and Emergency New Zealand. They will extinguish any fire that does not meet the conditions of the restricted fire season. •Firefighters’ Christmas-New Year call-outs, page 15

TAYLORS MISTAKE Surf Life Saving Club will benefit from a sausage sizzle on Saturday. The Emergency Services Volunteer Barbecue encourages locals to support the club by heading down to Bunnings Warehouse Riccarton, between 9am and 4pm, to buy a sausage or make a donation. All money raised from the barbecue will go directly to the club. Surf Life Saving New Zealand senior executive Matt Warren said he’s looking forward to seeing the community come together to support emergency services. “This great initiative will see all funds raised go straight to local surf life saving clubs, helping our volunteers continue serving the community in times of need. “We encourage locals to head to their local Bunnings to buy a sausage or make a donation to help us raise funds and continue the vital work we do,” he said. Bunnings Warehouse Riccarton complex manager Morgan Walker said it is a way for team members and the community to show their appreciation for everyday heroes and the important work they carry out on a day to day basis.

THE HOLIDAY period is over for most people now and what a mixed bag of weather we have had over this time. I trust that you have had some time for rest and recreation and spending time with family and friends. While many of us did just that, others spent their “holiday” time making sure that we were safe. So I want to give a big shout out and thanks to the many volunteers who work so hard, not for recognition or acknowledgment, but for the good of others. Whether it be the surf lifesavers, the firefighters, the coastguards, community patrols or the many others that keep our communities strong

the rendering process from disrupting local residents and businesses. But just over a week ago, the factory had a very significant fire. While the business insurance will ensure that the staff are paid in the immediate future, there is uncertainty about what the longer term holds for this business. This will be a very stressful

time for all involved and I know that local people will have you in our thoughts. This is also the time that many people make “resolutions” to do things differently in the year ahead. Whatever the year holds for you, I hope that you are challenged and satisfied, that you look after yourself and those around you and that you will have a genuinely happy year.

Upper South Island travel guide PICTON

PLAN YOUR JOURNEY – PICTON TO CHRISTCHURCH State Highway 1 (SH1) north of Kaikōura opened to daytime traffic in December, restoring the coastal highway link from Picton to Christchurch. The re-opening of SH1 gives people two viable options for travel around the upper South Island, with the alternate route (via state highways 63, 6, 65 and 7 through Lewis Pass) remaining a reliable 24/7 option.

Make sure you allow enough time for your journey, whichever route you chose. Unexpected events, such as a crash, high volumes of traffic, ongoing wet weather or seismic activity, can cause delays. Ongoing roadworks and reduced speed limits in places mean that it won’t be possible for you to make up time.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON SH1

Parts of the road will still be under construction, so there will be some unsealed sections, lane closures with Stop/Go controls and speed restrictions. There will be night closures (8.30pm – 7am) north of Kaikōura between Clarence and Mangamaunu, and between Goose Bay and Peketa in the south. Closure points will be monitored 24/7.

OPEN 24/7*

CHRISTCHURCH

* Conditions can change any time, so it is important to check the current status at least two hours before you travel and at key route decision points. Visit www.nzta.govt.nz/p2c or freephone 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49)

Consider road closure hours before starting your trip and leave enough time to be clear of these sections so you can continue your journey. The opening hours are subject to adverse weather and seismic activity. If there is a lot of rain or another significant event, we may have to close the road for short periods of time. It’s important to remember the safety of those using the highway, and working on it, will always be our top priority.

WORK HAS RAMPED UP IN JANUARY Following the road opening on 15 December, most of the work sites closed down to help with traffic flow over the busy Christmas period. The work programme is now back in full delivery which will have a significant effect on the coastal corridor. NZ Transport Agency Journey Manager Tresca Forrester says ‘It’s a balancing act to schedule the reinstatement work to have a minimal effect on travel time while also ensuring the work gets done. Drivers should now expect it to take at least 5 ½ to 6 hours to drive between Picton and Christchurch on SH1 but should allow plenty of extra time in case of delays. Check www.nzta.govt.nz/p2c for the latest information.’

BE ROAD COURTEOUS • No stopping on SH1 within the closure areas outside of designated stop bays. • Be patient and cautious. Road conditions will be unfamiliar to many drivers, so a little bit of patience will go a long way. • Follow all traffic signs and any instruction given by road crew. • Obey speed limits to keep all road users safe. • Stay focused around rail lines. Expect trains at any time. • Keep fresh by taking breaks and supporting communities on the route.

Ferrymead, Christchurch and Wigram

Ferrymead fitness centre offers innovative programme Located in the recently opened commercial premises on the corner of Ferry Road and Waterman Place Ferrymead, the F45 Training Ferrymead gym offers an innovative fitness programme that is creating waves around the world. Developed in Sydney by Rob Deutsch, a former equities trader, F45, or Functional 45 minutes, is a team-based HIIT (highintensity interval training) workout protocol that focuses on motivation, innovation and results. Franchise owner Marcin Miroslaw, who also has F45 franchises in the central city (the first in the South Island) and Wigram (opening on January 27), says one of the key advantages of the F45 concept is that participants don’t need to think about what they have to do when they come to the gym for a workout. “The programme is all laid out for members and there are two personal trainers at each class, who correct people’s technique, motivate and encourage them, plus there’s the music designed by one of the world’s top DJs to keep them pumped,” Marcin says. Over the 45-minute programme, participants proceed round the circuit doing

short bursts of exercise, with shorter breaks in between. Circuit styles are different every day and there are more than 30 different workouts, combining elements of HIIT, Circuit Training, and Functional Training. This combination of interval, cardiovascular and strength training has been proven to be the most effective workout method for burning fat and building lean muscle. “It’s enjoyable, and it brings results,” Marcin says. “Workouts change daily and are never repeated, and all the workouts are tested by the F45 Athletic department to optimise the results and experience of the participants.” F45 offers several membership options, but most people opt for the month-on-month membership, with 28 days’ cancellation notice, he says. “Members have unlimited access to all classes and there is no joining or cancellation fee.” A big part of the F45 programme is the eight-week challenge. Run four times a year, it is a fantastic way to help people lose weight and reach their fitness goals, Marcin says. “The F45 eight-week challenge also includes nutritional support, shopping lists, recipes and daily meal plans and goal

tracking, which helps people achieve their weight loss goals in a much healthier way than going on diets. The next eight-week challenge starts on January 29. “F45 has been established in more than 30 countries around the world, and since coming to New Zealand, it has really taken off here. It’s different from other gyms as it is a big part of the community, with involvement in social events and members

PHOTO: CORY/NZ SURFING MAGAZINE YOUNG GUN: Ava Henderson (above left) won her first national title in Gisborne in the under-14 girls category, while her mum Donna won her second national title in the women’s over 40.

Mother, daughter win on the waves A TRIO of local surfers have returned home with titles after competing at the national surfing championship at Makorori Beach, Gisborne, last week. Taylors Mistake mother and daughter, Donna and Ava Henderson, had the perfect family vacation by both claiming gold

medals. Donna won the women’s over 40 title with a score of 10.2 in the final. She also finished third in the longboard category. Her daughter Ava, 12, took out her first national title by winning the girls under-14 section with a score of 13.7 to finish ahead of Levin’s Natasha Gouldsbury and Piha’s Liv Haysom. More impressively, Ava also

competed in the girls under-16 against much older opposition where she held her own. She posted the top score of 12.4 in the heats before being eliminated at the semi-final stage. Donna is the founder of the Christchurch School of Surf at Sumner Beach. She has been surfing since her early 20s and won her first national title at the age of 42 in

2017. Ava on the other hand has now already claimed her first national crown at just 12-yearsold. Redcliffs resident Lucy Te Moananui also claimed a title in Gisborne in the women’s over 30 category. She also finished third in the women’s stand up paddleboard final with a score of 9.97 behind Stella Smith from Gisborne

and Alexis Poulter from Waihi. Te Moananui also made it to the semi-final stage in the longboard. There was also success for Estella Hungerford, who finished second in the women’s longboard with a score of 6.83, behind Auckland’s Sasha Brownlie. Hungerford also finished fourth in the girls under-16 final by scoring 7.17.

A letter to our community. Thank you to our wonderful staff and to all those helping us following the recent devastating fire at the GELITA NZ plant in Woolston, Christchurch. There were four people on site at the time of the fire and fortunately no one was hurt. The fire has caused major structural and electrical damage, primarily in our processing area, and the food manufacturing areas of the plant. Our first job is to clean up, now that the fire and insurance investigators have given us the go ahead. The clean-up operation will include the removal of partially processed beef hide from the site over the next three or so weeks. During the removal, there will unfortunately be increased odours at some stages of the day. We are keenly aware of our near neighbours and will work very hard to keep the impact to an absolute minimum. Despite our best efforts, we expect that there will be spikes in odour while the partly processed material is treated and removed. It’s a huge job. But, once the material is removed, the source of the odour will have been eliminated. We are grateful for your patience and understanding while we undertake this work and we apologise for any short-term effect this may have on our local community. GELITA NZ takes beef hide, a by-product from meat works, extracts the collagen, and turns it into gelatine powder for use in a broad range of industries including the food, beverage, health and pharmaceutical sectors. While the fire has been a major setback for GELITA NZ, the plant was fully insured and our parent company has established a support team in Germany to help us through this period of uncertainty. Our customers are being serviced by the wider GELITA group while we plan for our future. We remain positive. GELITA NZ employs 60 staff and a further 300 indirectly. About three-quarters of our high quality gelatine is sent overseas. There is no doubt that we face a difficult period but we will continue to work hard for our future.

your way back to it As we return to our normal daily routines after the holidays you may begin to find the odd ache or pain creeping in.

T

his is a good indicator from our bodies, that the holiday routine was somewhat different. Perhaps you sit a lot for work and you were on the go or, you are normally more active and the holiday break was more sedentary. Either way the sooner you pay attention to these signals the easier it will be to deal with it. So what can you do to ward off pain and stiffness and boost your energy and alertness? 10 simple stretching exercises at your desk that will release tension from head to toe. They take only a few minutes. Set the alarm on your cell phone or computer to go off every hour to remind you it’s time to get up and stretch. Just stand up and sit down - no hands If you stand up and sit down (over and over) without using your hands it can be a challenge, do it while you’re on the phone; no one will know. Shrug your shoulders - to release the neck and shoulders Inhale deeply and shrug your shoulders, lifting them high up to your ears. Hold. Release and drop. Repeat three times. Loosen the hands with air circles Clench both fists, stretching both hands

True

out in front of you. Make circles in the air, first in one direction, to the count of ten. Then reverse the circles. Shake out the hands. Point your fingers - good for hands, wrist, and forearms

Stretch your left hand out in front of you, pointing fingers toward the floor. Use your right hand to increase the stretch, pushing your fingers down and toward the body. Be gentle do the same with the other hand. Now stretch your left hand out straight in front, wrist bent, with fingers pointing skyward. Use your right hand to increase the stretch, pulling the fingers back toward your body. Do the same on the other side. Release the upper body with a torso twist Inhale and as you exhale, turn to the right and grab the back of your chair with your right hand, and grab the arm of the chair with your left. With eyes level, use your grasp on the chair to help twist your torso around as far to the back of the room as possible. Hold the twist and let your eyes continue the stretch see how far around the room you can peer. Slowly come back to facing forward. Repeat on the other side. Do leg extensions Grab the seat of your chair to brace yourself

and extend your legs straight out in front of you so they are parallel to the floor.Flex and point your toes five times. Release. Repeat. Stretch your back with a “big hug” Hug your body, placing the right hand on your left shoulder and the left hand on your right shoulder. Breathe in and out, releasing the area between your shoulder blades. Cross your arms - for the shoulders and upper back Extend one arm out straight in front of you. With the other hand, grab the elbow of the outstretched arm and pull it across your chest, stretching your shoulder and upper back muscles. Hold. Release. Stretch out the other arm in front of you - repeat. Stretch your back and shoulders with a “leg hug” Sit on the edge of your chair (if it has wheels, wedge the chair against the desk or

wall to make sure it does not roll). Put your feet together, flat on the floor. Lean over, chest to knees, letting your arms dangle loosely to the floor. Release your neck. Now bring your hands behind your legs, right hand grasping left wrist, forearm (or elbow if you can reach that far), left hand grasping the right. Feel the stretch in your back, shoulders and neck. Hold. Release your hands to the floor again. Repeat three times or as often as it feels good. Look up to release upper body Sit up tall in your chair, or stand up. Stretch your arms overhead and interlock your fingers. Turn the palms to the ceiling as you lift your chin up, tilt your head back, and gaze up at the ceiling, too. Inhale, exhale, release.
